Evans High School senior Myles McDavid is this week's Player of the Week. McDavid plays guard and stands at 6-foot-1.

Myles McDavid knew he was getting close, but he wasn’t counting.

So when the senior got the ball and hit a 3-pointer to reach 1,000-career points, coach Kevin Kenny made sure there was some acknowledgement.

On Tuesday, McDavid scored 18 points to help Evans beat Lakeside, 46-45.

The performance helped the Knights in their hunt for the subregion’s No. 2 seed and also helped McDavid grab player of the week honors.

“I didn’t know exactly how much I needed,” McDavid said. “It really wasn’t my goal. My goal is winning games and making it to the state playoffs.”

Averaging more than 16 points per game this season, McDavid came to Evans after playing as a freshman at Heidelberg High School in Germany – home of an Army base – and at Grovetown as a sophomore.

Having seen McDavid when the player was at Grovetown, Kenny knew the talent he was getting. With McDavid’s ball-handling ability and quickness, McDavid would be a great fit for Kenny’s system.

Describing himself as a pass-first guard, McDavid has focused on improving his shot. He’s put in extra time in the gym before games and practice, working with his dad, Anthony.

Against the Panthers, McDavid was clutch, with highlights including making huge two steals off the dribble as the Knights improved to 14-9 overall and 6-2 in the subregion.

“He did a little bit of everything,” Kenny said.
